Chunk's Story

Chunk is a 60 lbs, 4 year old bully mix that was saved from a Houston euthanasia list after his time was up. While his past is unknown, we do know he is one of the most statistically unadoptable dogs on the planet. He’s a black ‘mutt’. He’s not a puppy. He’s got visible and invisible scars from his prior, obviously horrifyingly traumatic life. He hates cats, nail trims, and also whines and pants anxiously for car rides. He struggles immensely with going to new places and meeting new animals. He completely fails at it, which is why he has been in a foster home for several months and is still not adopted. While Chunk is fine seeing other dogs in his foster home and even eventually smelling/touching noses with them through barriers, he has yet to have a successful meet and greet with a dog he hasn’t spent time with. He assumes every new dog is a psychopath who is out to get him initially, which makes him act a fool. He puts on a scary show, alarm barks, and lunges to protect his ‘bubble’; it’s a very high level of social anxiety rooted in fear and is honestly quite sad. While his social circle is quite small, once he makes a buddy, he really enjoys playing with them. Chunk thrives on clear leadership, stability, avoiding his PTSD like triggers, predictability, boringness, and having his crate as his safe space.

Are you sold yet? Probably not 🤣. It’s not all bad by any means. Chunk is a very sweet, loving, extroverted boy with people, and especially when snacks are involved. He’s very chill, low maintenance, and quiet when he settles into a place and understands there are no ongoing threats or ‘evil’ lurking about. He likes limited play and stroll time but mostly is low energy and likes multiple daily naps, snuggles, and sunbathing. He sleeps through the night and is crate and housetrained. He likes baths and is a gentleman in the tub. He lets his little human foster sisters dress him up. He has not been aggressive with people in any manner, even for veterinary visits and ‘scary’ 🙄 nail trims. He’s physically healthy and Iikes to keep his teeth clean with dental chews and sticks. His personality, quirks, and uniqueness know no bounds, and to know him is to know a little splash of comedy and resilience related to enjoying life after darkness. He’s a cute low rider clunker blockhead tank and class clown.

We have not given up on Chunk yet because we have to believe there is a place and human(s) in the world for him somewhere, a place that’s willing to give him the peace he so desperately deserves to find for the last part of his life. An ass for every chair, so-to-speak. He needs a human(s) to realize they aren’t going to change him or ‘fix’ him, but rather support and love him as he is. He needs to be the only pet in the home (or we would possibly entertain an adoption with his foster sister, Haven). And he wants to be a home body with a fenced yard. If you can give him that (and the food/snacks he lives for), he would be your best friend and loyal shadow. Any heart that has been through the trauma he has loves fiercely on the other side. Chunk will remind his family that saving one dog doesn’t change the world, but it does change the world for that dog so they can change their heroes for the better too.
