Rusty's Story

Rusty is a very handsome and sweet, red heeler mix boy who is around 2-3 years old. He’s a perfect medium size at about 40 pounds (closer to 45 pounds at ideal weight). Rusty was saved from a high kill shelter in Roswell, NM at the last minute on a day where he found himself with a dozen dogs on the euthanasia list due to lack of space. Rusty is a healthy boy with no ongoing medical issues and has been adjusting well in his foster home. We do not get the impression that life has been very kind to Rusty previously as he is a bit under-socialized and fearful in some situations. Sometimes he cowers with certain noises or fast movements and has a prominent flight response, though he has not shown any tendency to react aggressively in our care. He is quite submissive. Rusty’s first instinct is to be friendly with people and he very much wants to please and receive praise. He has been good for handling. Though he was completely terrified at even the sight of small children, outdoor birds, moths, etc. in his foster home at first, he is learning that they aren’t really that scary. He is also food motivated and bonds quickly to anyone who is nice to him. He is incredibly smart, resilient, and thrives on predictability and knowing what to expect in his world. He is crate trained (possibly fully housetrained) and sleeps through the night. He has been quiet and non-destructive in foster care, and he has done well socially with various dogs in his foster home and in the shelter prior to transport. He walks pretty well on a leash and likes to play; he’s moderately active but also happy to snuggle/relax and have a couch day.

Rusty’s forever family will need to have some patience as he continues to learn the world doesn’t have to be scary for him anymore. We feel he will do best in a home with a fenced yard, another confident dog(s) his size or larger, older kids or no kids, and a home that can offer him predictability and comfort as well as space when he needs it. Please give this sweet boy a chance. We know that Rusty is going to be one of the most loving, rewarding, and unforgettable dogs for his forever family.
